Almost Heaven
Words and Music by Dave Laurence • From the album Every Lonesome Road

Her Daddy was a Mountaineer, drove the rains until they brought him home.
In between from there to here, he rode the rails from first light ‘til the gloam.
He built a home on a mountainside, and he raised up a family,
Daddy was a good man, that can’t be denied, but Daddy doesn’t have much use for me.

‘Cause Daddy’s got a baby girl whose big bright eyes send fire down the line.
I saw them from another world, and I knew I had to make them mine.
The fire led me to a place so beautiful I had to pause,
Almost as beautiful as her sweet face, so I asked her, I asked her where she was.
She said, ‘Almost heaven,’ in a voice so sweet and low,
Almost heaven, I think I’m gonna go.

In a valley west of the Shenandoah, waits the girl with the big bright fiery eyes.
The ones that set my face aglow, to ignore them would only be unwise.
I need to harness that precious fire and let it fill my world somehow,
No denying she’s who I desire, and my thoughts are straying there right now.
To almost heaven, she’s sleeping peacefully,
Almost heaven, tonight she dreams of me.

And while she sleeps on that mountain, I lie awake on this prairie,
A few more days, and I’m counting
Until that fire comes to carry me away, carry me away,
To almost heaven, can’t wait another night,
Almost heaven, I’m following the light.

Climbing up that Blue Ridge hill, hand in hand, we’ll watch the rising sun,
Coming down I know I will tell the girl that she’s the only one.
Her precious eyes will fill my cup with all the fire that I can hold,
Make love beneath the stars where she grew up, and her passion will sanctify my soul.
It’s almost heaven, you know it feels so right,
Almost heaven, close enough for tonight.

Alone For The Holidays
Words and Music by Dave Laurence • A Christmas song Dave wrote in 1998.

Three wise men followed a star,
Coming from fields afar,
to find the Child we celebrate.
It's not that different for you,
but your star's fading from view,
You're lonely and you don't want to wait.

Don't get lost in the fact
that you're waking up alone,
When the reason for the season
is the hope we've all been shown.

If you're alone for the holidays,
I'll send a smile your way,
Know that you're really not alone.
'Cause there's love all around
where glad tidings abound,
and you're bound to find one of your own.

If you're wishing on a star to bring a lover where you are,
I'll hope you find someone to make your dreams come true.
But at this time of year We must be of good cheer,
Remember Jesus was single too.

If you're alone for the holidays,
I'll send a smile your way,
Know that you're really not alone.
'Cause there's love all around
where glad tidings abound,
and you're bound to find one of your own.

Analog Soul
Words and Music by Dave Laurence • From the album Analog Soul

It’s a brand new digital world, you can hold it in your hand,
But when it comes down to boy meets girl, well, I’ll never understand.
They say the game is new and improved, I’ve seen it all and I don’t feel moved.
So many options for all to explore, Isn’t anybody true anymore?

The search for instant gratification is gonna drive you berserk,
‘Cause if you want to feel the elation, you gotta put in the work.
This modern love makes me feel like a clown, I may be broken but I’m not broken down.
I’m not over the hill and I’m not past my prime, but I was made for an earlier time.

I’ve got an analog soul, turn me on and warm me up a while,
Analog soul, play me loud and let me make you smile.
You may want something more up to speed, but look again ‘cause I’m just what you need,
Me and this analog soul.

You can have the kind of love that’s warm and rich and real,
I may show some signs of age, but at this price, I’m a steal.
Show me how you’d use me, take the sound and make it whole,
Prove to me you’re worthy, and I’ll let you take control
of this analog soul.

It’s a digital world we live in, it’s a great time to be alive.
Ones and zeroes are not so forgiving, but an old heart can survive.
I don’t have all the whistles and bells, but after all, it’s the sound that sells.
So try me out, if you like what you hear, I can take you back to yesteryear.

I’ve got an analog soul, turn me on and warm me up a while,
Analog soul, play me loud and let me make you smile.
You may want something more up to speed, but look again ‘cause I’m just what you need,
Me and this analog soul.

As The Crow Flies
Words and Music by Dave Laurence • From the album Every Lonesome Road

November, there's a chill in the air,
Take me back to a place I know where
The leaves turn to color before they go brown
The air is so quiet you hear them fall down
It isn't so far from this dirty old town and its cries -
As the crow flies.

Remember... all the friends left behind,
They're right here in this scrapbook of mine.
Pictures of children at play on the lawn,
Some of them stayed and others moved on,
Soon they'll have children all grown up and gone from their eyes -
As the crow flies.

Time, like the crow, only flies forward,
Circles around but it always moves on.
Time is a thief, and given the chance would
Steal all the things that you love.

November,  feel the winter come on,
Take me back, 'fore the chance is all gone -
Back to the best things in life I call mine,
To strengthen the bonds that have weakened with time,
To look back and laugh as I grow older and wise -
As the crow flies.
